Grow a Train: Day 13 and Completion

Our Grow a Train Project has come to completion. It was supposed to be a 10 day venture, but with a busy weekend I let it soak a few extra days in order to get pictures. The water was reeking, smelled fishy and had taken on a gold tinge, which was not possible to capture in pictures. Yuck! I let the Professors see it one last time per their request, but was pretty panicky about them touching it. We had a few close calls. The train has now been thrown out, and I washed the container in the dishwasher on the highest, hottest setting possible.

Over all the Professors enjoyed the project. They asked often to see the train and check its progress, and Masha' Allah showed alot of patience. I think they were disapointed in the size, expecting it to grow much bigger. Remember at one point Professor #1 thought it would grow as big as Thomas, and he was going to ride in it around the house? That didn't really pan out.

We enjoyed the challenge, but I can't say I was sorry to see it go ; ) Below are some final pictures. Hope you enjoyed following this Project : )

Grow a Train: Day 7

It has been exactly a week since we first began our Grow a Train activity. Here it is on Day 1:

And here it is today, on Day 7:

I'm not sure its grown 600 x's its original size as the box states, but we still have a few more days to go. The water is gross and slimey, and the train is still stored on the shelf, but in veiwing area of the Professors, who occasionally ask to see it.

I would say they have been so so about this activity. Curious to see how much its grown, but put off by the slow pace. The box says it can be shrunk and regrown, but I think we'll all be ok just doing it once insha' Allah.

We'll post a final Day 10 update to complete the project.

Grow a Train.

The Professors Grammy is visiting this week, and Masha' Allah brought lots of goodies, one of which was this gift from a friend:

Maybe some of us remember this type of toy from our childhood, if not, the following pictures summarize the basic idea:

It thought it would be impossible to explain to the Professors that it was going to take 10 Days for the train to grow, when they could not wait 10 minutes. Here is the the train at around 10 am.

This was a common problem:

While the poor guys eagerly looked on waiting for the train to grow, I flipped the box over and read this, and nearly got sick:

After the Professors got too antsy, I explained to them that the train has to drink all the water to get big, and that this will take a long time. We decided it would be a good idea to let the train 'rest' and drink its water up on the shelf, and we could check on it from time to time.

Here it is around 4pm:

It seems to be making progress. We checked on it again around 6 pm and it had not gotten much bigger. Masha' Allah, Professor #1 is convinced the train is going to grow big enough to sit inside, and is very concerned about when this will occur. We'll give updates as we progress with this insha' Allah. Stay tuned! ; )
