Weekend Project: Dollar Store Suncatchers

On weekends when we are home on Sunday's, I like to have an activity planned for the Professors, since they have been without structure for two days. This is also a good way to ease back into our school week, while still enjoying the last of the weekend.

 A new Dollar Tree recently opened up in the same Plaza as our grocery store resides. We've stopped in a couple of times, and Masha' Allah they have some good, quality stuff as far as  Dollar stores can go, though most in our area are all pretty good. We stopped in this Saturday and I came across these Suncatcher kits:

Does anyone remember doing these as a child? I loved to! and I was happily surprised to see they were still around. I thought they would be the perfect thing for a weekend project, and something that would help get our minds off the fact that it didn't snow, though it had been forecast to snow up to 3 inches, and that the Ravens weren't in the Super Bowl, so we probably weren't going to make much of an effort to watch it. 

Getting Started

Masha' Allah the Professors did a great job getting started on their own, and didn't really need much instruction, except for a small suggestion of not mixing all the colors into a black gooey mess. 

Professor #3, our Professor who joins in at will on activities, loves art and painting Masha' Allah, and did a really great job concentrating, and working diligently on his Suncatcher, even if he didn't use all the paint.

Professor # 1 went straight to work on his, and pretty much straight to work on mixing up the colors. He had to be reminded a few times, that, its good to try different colors in different areas of the Suncatcher. He did what he could ; )

Professor #2, his identical twin brother, Masha' Allah, did the polar opposite, and completely used up each color of paint before moving on to the next color. Masha' Allah, he did a very careful job not to mix any colors, either in the containers or on the Suncatcher...for awhile. Near completion of his Suncatcher, he proudly shouted to me, 'Mommy, red and green make black! 

All three completed Suncatchers, drying, and waiting to be hung in the Sun : )

We hung the Suncatchers with pipe cleaners and scotch tape, in our school room, just above our table, where we get good late afternoon sun. 

The kitchen overlooks the school room, so I get a nice view of them too, throughout the day, Masha' Allah. 

Alhumdullilah, this turned out to be a really fun project for everyone. Maybe I should've bought myself one to make! : )
